Boiler repair
What to send first
- 1
What make and model is the boiler, and roughly how old is it?
- 2
Is there a fault code or flashing light on the display?
- 3
What is it doing: no heating, no hot water, losing pressure, leaking or cutting out?
When a boiler stops firing, loses pressure or leaves you without hot water, Andrew starts by finding out why. He reads the fault code and checks the pressure, the gas supply to the boiler, the fan, the ignition and the controls, then tells you what has failed and what it will take to put right.
Common faults on Worcester, Baxi and Ideal boilers
Many breakdowns come down to a handful of parts: a diverter valve that sticks so the radiators heat but the taps run cold, a condensate pipe that freezes in a cold snap, a failed fan or ignition electrode, a leaking pressure relief valve, or a pump that has seized. Most of these can be put right with a single replacement part. Potterton and Glow-worm boilers get the same checks.
When a repair stops making sense
If the heat exchanger is failing or parts are no longer made, Andrew will say so and talk you through boiler replacement instead. Once a boiler is running again, a yearly boiler service is the best way to keep it that way.
